How to Prepare for Your First Physical Therapy Appointment
Quick Answer
Wear loose athletic clothing and supportive sneakers so your therapist can see and move the area being treated. Bring a photo ID, insurance card, any referral your plan requires, a medication list, imaging reports if you have them, and PIP or workers' compensation details after an accident. Arrive 10–15 minutes early. For the minute-by-minute visit, read what happens at your first PT visit.
What to wear
Athletic shorts or loose pants, a t-shirt, and closed-toe sneakers work well. Avoid dresses, tight jeans, belts that restrict movement, or jewelry that gets in the way of the injured area. If we are treating a shoulder, a tank top or loose short-sleeve shirt helps. If we are treating a knee or ankle, shorts or pants that roll above the joint help. What to bring
- Photo ID and insurance card
- Physician referral or prescription if your plan requires one for payment
- List of medications and major medical history
- X-ray, MRI, or operative reports if you already have them — do not delay the visit to wait on films unless your surgeon instructed otherwise
- Workers' compensation or auto (PIP) claim information when the injury is work- or crash-related
- A list of questions and the activities you want to return to
Insurance and referrals before you arrive
We review benefits so you are not surprised at billing. Florida direct access lets many adults start for up to 30 days without a physician referral; some insurers still want a referral to pay. We do not advertise a 24–48 hour authorization guarantee. Call (786) 613-7160 with your plan name. Guide: physical therapy insurance in Florida.
