Quick Answer

At a first anxiety counseling session with a licensed mental health counselor (LMHC), you will mostly talk: what you are feeling, when it started, what makes it worse and what you want to change. The counselor explains confidentiality, may use a short questionnaire and works with you on a plan. Near Miami Lakes and Hialeah, you can see Rosa Barroso, LMHC, at our Miami Gardens clinic or by telehealth, in English or Spanish.

Signs it may be time to talk to someone

Everyone worries. According to the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), anxiety may need care when it does not go away, gets worse over time and gets in the way of daily life. Common signs include:

  • Worry that is hard to control on most days.
  • Restlessness, trouble sleeping or feeling tired all the time.
  • Physical signs like a racing heart, muscle tension or stomach problems.
  • Avoiding places, people or tasks because of fear.

Physical symptoms can have medical causes, so it also helps to tell your doctor.

Before your first session

  • When you call, we confirm your insurance (for counseling we accept Medicare and Self Pay) and help you choose in-person or telehealth.
  • You fill out intake and consent forms.
  • It can help to write down what you want to talk about, any medicines you take and questions for the counselor.

What happens during the first session

  1. Confidentiality. The counselor explains what stays private and the few legal exceptions, such as a risk of serious harm.
  2. Your story. You talk about what brings you in: symptoms, stress at home or work, health, sleep and what has helped before.
  3. Short questionnaires. Some counselors use brief screening forms to measure anxiety and track progress over time.
  4. Goals and a plan. Together you decide what you want to work on and how often to meet.

You do not have to tell everything at once. It is normal to feel nervous; many people feel some relief just from saying things out loud.

Common approaches to anxiety

NIMH describes psychotherapy, such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), as a common and well-studied treatment for anxiety disorders. Some people also take medicine prescribed by a doctor. Your counselor will explain the approach they suggest for you and why. When anxiety and chronic pain feed each other, counseling and physical therapy can be coordinated; see coordinated care and physical therapy in Miami Gardens.

How to choose a culturally sensitive, Spanish-speaking therapist

For many families in Hialeah, Miami Lakes and Miami Gardens, it is easier to describe feelings in the language they grew up with. Questions worth asking:

  • Language: Can sessions be fully in Spanish, or switch between languages?
  • Experience: Have you worked with bilingual, immigrant or multigenerational families?
  • Family and faith: How do you include them if they matter to me?
  • Stigma: Will you understand if I feel that "going to therapy" is not something my family talks about?
  • License: Are you licensed in Florida? You can look up any license on the Florida Department of Health website.
  • Practical fit: In person or telehealth? Which insurance do you take?

The right counselor respects your culture and values, does not judge, and adapts the plan to your life.

Frequently Asked Questions

What happens at a first anxiety counseling session?
Mostly conversation. The counselor explains confidentiality and its limits, asks what you are feeling, when it started and how it affects sleep, work and family, and may use short questionnaires. Together you set goals and decide how often to meet. You do not have to share everything in the first session.

Can I get anxiety therapy in Spanish near Miami Lakes or Hialeah?
Yes. Rosa Barroso, LMHC, speaks Spanish and sees patients in person at our clinic at 16191 NW 57 Ave, Suite A, Miami Gardens, a short drive from Miami Lakes and Hialeah, or by telehealth.

How do I know if a therapist is culturally sensitive?
Ask direct questions: Can we work in the language I think in? Have you worked with bilingual or immigrant families? How do you include family or faith if they matter to me? A good fit is a counselor who listens without judging and adapts the plan to your life, not the other way around.

Do I have to come in person, or can I use telehealth?
Either. Rosa Barroso, LMHC, sees patients in person in Miami Gardens and by telehealth. Some people start in person and switch to telehealth when schedules get busy. Ask us which option fits your situation.

Does Medicare cover anxiety counseling?
Medicare Part B has covered counseling with enrolled licensed mental health counselors since January 1, 2024; you usually pay 20% of the approved amount after the deductible. For counseling we accept Medicare and Self Pay. We do not accept Medicaid.
