Physical Therapy After Knee Replacement Surgery | All In One Specialty Health
Introduction
Total knee replacement is one of the most successful orthopedic surgeries — but the outcome depends heavily on post-operative physical therapy. At All In One Specialty Health in Miami Gardens, we guide knee replacement patients through each rehab phase with surgeon-coordinated, personalized care.
Hub guide: post-surgical physical therapy in Miami Gardens.
Phase 1: Hospital to Home (Days 0–14)
Goals: swelling control, knee extension (straightening), flexion (bending) to 90°, safe transfers and walking with assistive device.
- Ankle pumps and quad sets
- Heel slides and passive range-of-motion
- Gait training with walker or cane
- Swelling management techniques
Phase 2: Outpatient PT (Weeks 2–8)
Goals: improve flexion toward 120°+, normalize gait, stair climbing, independent household mobility.
- Progressive strengthening (closed-chain exercises)
- Stationary bike and treadmill walking
- Balance and proprioception training
- How long knee replacement PT lasts
Phase 3: Advanced Function (Weeks 8–16+)
Goals: return to work, driving, recreational activity, full strength symmetry.
Common Mistakes After Knee Replacement
- Skipping PT or home exercises
- Pushing flexion too aggressively (respect surgical healing)
- Avoiding all movement due to fear of pain
- What happens if you skip PT
